Freshman Change Project: Recycling Batteries

Project's Abstract

The dangerous materials inside batteries are usually mercury, lead, cadmium, and nickel. They are harmful to the environment and public health if they are introduced into landfills. However, most people are not aware of the toxic substances inside batteries. These people usually dispose of them in trashcans. If batteries are recycled, people’s health risk will be reduced, and our natural resources will not be used up as quickly. The problem we are trying to solve is battery pollution, which is caused by the toxic substances the batteries contain. To solve this problem, our group is going to encourage people to recycle their batteries, and make pamphlets to educate them. Even though our efforts may not change the whole world, it is the first step in a very long process. By advocating recycling in our own community, more batteries will be recycled. Later on, more people will know that it is good to recycle their batteries rather than throwing them away in the trash. Eventually, our goal will be achieved.
